Abstract

Soft tissue mass in the buttock is derived from a common primitive mesenchyme and the tumor originates from them to closely resemble the prototype tissues in varying degrees. Almost all cases of the soft tissue mass have a benign course, which can be cured by local excision and a few cases have malignant course, being resistant to therapy and resulting in recurrence or metastasis. The authors reviewed 18 cases of soft tissue mass in the buttock which load received treatment in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Pusan National University Hospital from January 1982 to December 1995. The results were as follows: 1. Among 18 cases of soft tissue mass in the buttock, 16 cases(89%) were benign and 2 cases(11%) were malignant. 2. The most common benign tumor was fibromatosis(33%), followed by lipoma(22%), hemangioma(17%), neurofibroma(11%), and leiomyoma(6%). The malignant tumors were fibrosarcoma(6%) and liposarcoma(6%). 3. In sex preference of soft tissue mass in the buttock, females were affected about 2 times often than males, but the 2 cases of malignant soft tissue tumor were both male. 4. Local recurrence rate of soft tissue mass in the buttock was 28%(fibromatosis: 33%, hemangioma: 33%), and this was a higher score than that for soft tissue mass in other sites. 5. Postoperative complication after local excision of the mass developed in 6 cases(33%). Among them, 1 case(6%) was local wound infection, and 5 cases(28%) were delayed wound healing because of a hematoma formation in the dead space.
